Goals for 2012

May 7, 2012 § Leave a comment

I have tried multiple times to set up a Vision Board. I read that displaying your true desires where you can see them everyday allows the world to bend your way. Truth is if you’re reminded constantly of what you want in life, you’ll open your eyes to see the opportunities when they cross your path.

It works. And here’s how I know:

My first sorry attempt at making a Vision Board was a few years ago. I bought decorative tape and made a square on the wall next to my bed. It remained blank for weeks. I was listening to Hot 97 when I heard that Jay-Z was stepping in as a headliner for the All Points West 3 day music festival. I had never saw Jay-Z in concert and made a promise to myself I was going to win those tickets.

I went straight to my room, wrote Jay-Z’s name on computer paper, and taped it right in its center. The next opportunity came for the 97th texter to win tickets and I sent multiple texts only to receive in reply you are the 16th texter. You are the 59th texter. You are the 72nd texter. And the last message I saw was Sorry the 97th texter has already been chosen. Not to be discouraged, I assured myself I had the whole weekend to try, but regardless I was going to win those tickets.

I checked in on my mom who was dying my grandmother’s hair in the bathroom. After some small talk I returned to my room to see I had two missed calls from a 212 number. My phone then rang again and despite my preference of ignoring numbers I don’t know, I answered. The lady on the phone had an unfamiliar voice. She asked, “Don’t you know how to pick up the phone when Hot 97 is calling you.” I had won.

To my shock, and to the shock of my mother and grandmother as they came rushing into my room due to my high-pitched screams, I had won. I won two tickets and went to my first Jay-Z concert. It was rainy, muddy, and cold. I sang along to every song he performed and felt like it would last forever. (See pictures below)

Hearing my name on the radio was magical. With all the might I had, I convinced myself, as well as the world, I was going to this concert. There was all the proof I needed that placing your goals in front of you would open up the world to opportunities to reach them

Despite my proof, I never filled in the rest of my Vision Board. My second attempt at building a Vision Board proved to yield the same results. So after quitting my job to uncover my passion for writing, I embark on a new journey. With new travels the rules change. Instead of a Vision Board, I am placing my goals for 2012 here. Who says you can only make resolutions on January 1st?

So here are my goals for 2012:

  1. Write everyday – Poetry, blogging, and everything in-between
  2. Publish poetry
  3. Find out what drives my passion
  4. Become an active advocate for Casa Samuel
  5. Pitch and sell an article to a major publication
  6. Try Everything
  7. Stop Making Excuses
